If a child is recognised to be at the end of their life, they will have the option of staying in Hummingbird House – the only Children’s Hospice in Queensland or remaining at home with the support of a Carmella’s House care team for their final days. During this period more flexible hours are generally offered, including night cover wherever possible. Carmella’s House will have an experienced Parental Support team that will be available to offer practical, emotional and spiritual support for the family during the most difficult of times.
In the days leading up to the end of a child’s life, as well as in the days and weeks that follow it, the team will be on hand to support the family. They will work very closely with the care team at the centre, as well as with other healthcare professionals, to ensure that they have all of the necessary information regarding the family’s journey and their individual needs. They are then able to provide the highest possible standard of care throughout the bereavement period.
We already work closely with the Paediatric Palliative Care Team at Lady Cilento Children's Hospital (LCCH). Our skilled and dedicated Nursing team will be happy to provide home symptoms management e.g. subcutaneous or IV therapies for children that require analgesia, antipyretics, fluids, antimymetics to minimise the pain, maximise comfort and provide holistic care with respect and dignity.
